An $18.5 million repaving project on the Northern State Parkway is now underway in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, covering 50 lane miles of eastbound roadway from Exit 33 in Westbury all the way to Exit 40 near Huntington. Work began this week as part of a broader $58.8 million state investment to resurface key Long Island roads. Completion is expected by summer 2026.
The current work is focused on the eastbound lanes only. Crews are starting at the Wantagh State Parkway interchange — that's Exit 33 in the Village of Westbury — and paving eastward to the New York Avenue overpass near Exit 40 in the Town of Huntington.
If you commute westbound on the Northern State from Smithtown or anywhere in western Suffolk, you already got your smooth ride — the westbound lanes were completed last fall.
This stretch is the final phase of a five-year renewal of the parkway's riding surface, with previous sections completed in 2020, 2023, and 2024.
NYSDOT expects the eastbound repaving to wrap up by summer 2026. The parkway will remain open throughout. Expect lane shifts and possible overnight lane closures as work progresses east.
Road repaving typically means reduced lane widths in active work zones, sporadic daytime slowdowns, and occasional overnight closures. NYSDOT generally schedules its heaviest lane closures during off-peak hours.
This project is part of Governor Hochul's statewide push to repair roads following what NYSDOT called one of the harshest winters in recent memory — the snowiest in at least a decade. The freeze-thaw cycle accelerated pavement damage across Long Island significantly.
The Northern State work is one piece of a larger $58.8 million Long Island road repair campaign that also includes resurfacing on the Hempstead Turnpike, Nassau Expressway, Veterans Memorial Highway, and Sunrise Highway service roads.
